Mindfulness Practices Training: Managing Stress in Everyday Life
Mindfulness is a self-awareness training adapted from Buddhist meditation. Jon Kabatt-Zinn describes Mindfulness in his book ‘Full Catastrophe Living’ as “an intentional focused awareness – a way of paying non-judgmental attention on purpose, and in the present moment.” Our lives are often lived as though we are operating on automatic pilot. We arrive at destinations without noticing landmarks along the way. We eat our food without really tasting the flavours or relishing the aromas of a prepared meal. The state of ‘multi-tasking’ has become the norm as we scan e-mails, text messages, talk on cell phones while interacting with our loved ones and friends. We sometimes even try to convince ourselves we are ‘saving time’ when in fact we are losing the present moment and exposing ourselves to the harmful effects of a stress-enhanced life.
When we learn how to live more ‘mindfully’ in our day to day life, we gain a greater awareness of the present moment. We have better capacity to maintain our concentration and focus on tasks. We think more creatively. We are more present in our relationships.
