Example #3 – Decision and Follow-Up
Off-site counsellor helps make a significant organizational human resource decision and offers a follow-up plan.
It came to light that a senior middle manager in a very sensitive and strategic position had a chaotic secret life of personal financial mismanagement. A decision had to be made quickly whether to rescue or terminate the individual.
The consultant counsellor was called at home by Human Resources and the COO and asked if this person was "salvageable". Since the counsellor knew of the individual through informal organizational interactions, he was able to offer an informed opinion and give a clear plan " including a mandatory referral to the consultant counsellor through the EAP service.
With these choices, it would be the employee's decision to either accept the proposed plan, be fired or take a severance package. It would allow the consultant counsellor to supervise the individual's rehabilitation and if necessary, recommend termination if the employee failed to follow through.
The employee not only followed through, but is currently an integral part of the senior management team. This meant an enormous financial and creative saving to the organization.
